Oct 2015 : ABU takes over universal media quality management standard

On October 27, 2015, during its General Assembly in Istanbul, the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) will take over the global promotion and further development of the ISAS BCP 9001 media quality management standard.

Guillaume Chenevière, former director of the Swiss television TSR and director of the Media and Society Foundation, will officially transmit the standard to ABU Secretary-General, Dr. Javad Mottaghi. A quality management workshop for media executives will follow the next day.

ISAS BCP 9001 was recently described by the leading German speaking newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung as a « stamp of quality » and Thai PBS, soon to be certified, welcomes it a « a key lever to take up the challenges of public service broadcasting ».

The standard was originally developed by the Swiss-based Media and Society Foundation, a not-for-profit initiative of media professionals promoting quality in media by applying best management practices to media companies through a voluntary process of self-regulation, subject to a third party independent control.

It has been recognized by the professional community worldwide and successfully implemented by media organizations on several continents. The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, based in Malaysia, will give it the support of an international media organization dedicated to providing 4,2 billion individuals with « knowledge and information to enrich people’s lives».

Based on a grassroot survey on five continents, the standard was launched in December 2003 at the World Electronic Media Forum during the UN World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Several media companies have been certified : Canal Once in Mexico, Trans TV in Indonesia, Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) in Malaysia, La Chaîne Parlementaire (LCP) in France, La Télé, BNJ Radios, Energy Radios (NRJ), Media One Group, Radio Fribourg and Radio Chablais in Switzerland. Several other media companies are at various stages of tackling the standard, in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Mongolia, Romania, Mexico and Switzerland.

ISAS BCP 9001 is registered with the International Standardization and Accreditation Services, New York.

SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, is the standard’s certification body on all continents, except Latin America, where certification is entrusted to Instituto Mexicano de Normalizaciòn y Certificaciòn (IMNC).
